Welcome to the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services (NDHHS) HIV Program website. The HIV program is divided in three sections: HIV Surveillance, HIV Prevention, and Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Part B. These programs work to: 

  • Monitor newly reported cases and estimated number of individuals living with HIV/AIDS 
  • Assess the risks for HIV infection and develop effective HIV prevention strategies
  • Providing information and materials on HIV transmission and how to protect individuals from getting HIV
  • Providing testing to those at risk for getting HIV
  • Address the health needs of persons living with HIV 
  • Optimize health outcomes by funding health care and support services to enhance health care access and retention in care
  • Provide case management to link clients to resources

About HIV

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).

Prevention

Today, more tools than ever are available to prevent HIV. You can use strategies such as abstinence (not having sex), limiting your number of sexual partners, never sharing needles, and using condoms the right way every time you have sex, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

Testing

Everyone has a HIV status, do you know your status? The only way to know your HIV status is to get tested. Knowing your status gives you powerful information to keep you and your partner healthy.

Today, an estimated 1.2 million people are living with HIV in the United States. Thanks to better treatments, people with HIV are now living longer and have a better quality of life than ever before.

Health Care Providers

Healthcare providers are important partners in effective HIV prevention and treatment that occurs across a continuum of care. There are many tools and information available across the HIV continuum, including up-to-date tools and guidelines for your practice, and educational materials for your patients.

Syringe Service Programs

Syringe services programs (SSPs) are community-based prevention programs that can provide a range of services, including linkage to substance use disorder treatment; access to and disposal of sterile syringes and injection equipment; and vaccination, testing, and linkage to care and treatment for infectious diseases.

Community Response

The NDHHS, along with ND communities and partners, are working towards Ending the HIV Epidemic. The plan leverages critical scientific advances in HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and outbreak response by coordinating the highly successful programs, resources, and infrastructure of many partner organizations.

Education and Events

Available education and training events are intended for primary care physicians, infectious disease specialists, HIV specialists, nurses, and public health and preventive medicine specialists. These educational opportunities focus on best practices related to HIV testing and prevention and optimizing care of people with HIV.
