Purpose

Foster care is 24-hour out-of-home safety service for children whose parents are unable to provide for their needs. Foster care includes food, clothing, shelter, security, safety, guidance and comfort to children in need of out-of-home care. When a child is removed from their home by court order, custody is granted to a public agency, such as a Human Service Zone, the Division of Juvenile Services or a Tribal Nation.

Levels of Licensure

North Dakota offers different types of family foster care licensing to ensure individuals or families have options to meet their needs and the level of care that they would like to provide.

  • Fully Licensed - Care for unrelated children and length of stay is dependent on the case plan.
  • Relative Licensed - Care for relative children and length of stay is dependent on the case plan.
  • Certified - Care for unrelated children for no more than 30 days. Great for respite and shelter care short-term.
