North Dakota Medicaid covers regular wellness visits for babies, children and young adults under age 21. These visits are also called well-child checks. Wellness visits make sure kids and teens get the care they need to stay healthy and grow well.

Why wellness visits matter

Getting care early helps prevent small problems from turning into bigger ones. Wellness visits make sure children get the right care at the right time in the right care setting.

They help:

  • Catch health issues early
  • Prevent illness
  • Make sure a child gets vaccines and other needed care

What wellness visits include

Wellness visits are preventive care. They help find health issues early and make sure kids are growing and developing as they should.

These visits allow parents or caregivers a chance to ask questions and discuss concerns they may have.

They include:

  • Physical exam
  • Vision screening
  • Hearing screening
  • Developmental and behavioral screenings
  • Dental screening including fluoride varnish and orthodontic exams
  • Vaccinations/immunizations
  • Health education for parents and teens
  • Substance use education
  • And more

When should children and teens get a wellness visit?

Children should get wellness visits on a regular schedule, even when they are healthy.

Babies need wellness visits at:
1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months

Toddlers need wellness visits at:
15 months, 18 months, 24 months and 30 months

After 30 months:
Children should get wellness visits at ages 3, 4, 5 and 6, and then once every year up to age 21.

Who can get wellness visits?

Babies, children and teens enrolled in North Dakota Medicaid, from birth to age 21, may get wellness visits for little or no cost.
