What can Kinship-ND assist caregivers with?
- One-on-one support
- Resources and Information based on your needs and the needs of the child
- Limited Financial assistance
- Reimbursement based (you need to save receipts)
- Assistance with paying an attorney for creating guardianship
- Allowance (Only for specific child welfare involved cases – Caseworker must be involved)
Who is a kinship caregiver?
A kinship caregiver can be a relative, member of a tribe or clan, godparent, stepparent, or other adults who have a relationship with a child who is living with them and who provide care, nurturing, and protection of the child(ren). There are an estimated 10,000 children in kinship care throughout North Dakota with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and neighbors. Are you one of them?
Eligibility for Kinship-ND
To be eligible you need to
- Be a North Dakota resident
- Have a child who is not your own living in your home
- The parent cannot be living in the home
- You cannot be a licensed foster provider for the child
We can assist those who have private placement (between parent and caregiver) or those who have the child due to state or tribal child welfare.
It does not matter if you have no legal rights, Power of Attorney (POA or DOPA), guardianship through state court, or Tribal custody.
