Medication Administration

This PowerPoint presentation has been developed by the North Dakota Department of Health to assist nurses in the training of unlicensed school staff on medication administration. All licensed nurses have been trained on medication administration, but the process of administering medication in the school setting is unique. The information provided in this document discusses best practices and how to safely and effectively administer medications, both over-the-counter and prescription, to students while they are at school. Included in this presentation are step-by-step guidelines regarding appropriate paperwork, medication storage, what medications can and cannot be given, and much more.

The information has been reviewed by several entities including the North Dakota Department of Health, the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction, the North Dakota Board of Nursing and various school nurses across the state. The training will take approximately two to three hours depending on the amount of questions each group may have. Nurses are encouraged to bring supplies to provide a "hands-on" or return demonstration on medication administration in conjunction with this presentation.

Please note the attached Word Document labeled Ear Drop and Eye Drop Instructions. This is an additional hand-out that is part of the Medication Administration presentation and training guide.
