FEBRUARY 2026 Updates
- Three new conditions were added to the ND newborn screening panel on February 3, 2026
The North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is committed to promoting the health of infants born in ND. Early detection of treatable hereditary and congenital conditions allows for the prevention or reduction of symptoms and, ultimately, saves babies’ lives. Screening for X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD), Mucopolysaccharidosis Type II (MPS II), and Krabbe Disease began for specimens received at the laboratory on February 3, 2026.
- ND Newborn Screening program is transitioning to a new blood spot card in the spring of 2026. The new card will have 7 pre-printed circles instead of the 5 which has historically been used. Facilities may continue to use the 5-spot cards until they are gone and may transition to the 7-spot cards at that time.
