Medically underserved areas (MUAs) and populations (MUP) identify geographic areas with a lack of access to primary care services. These designations help establish health maintenance organizations or community health centers. These designations never expire.

 

Scoring Criteria:

  • Provider per 1,000 population ratio: 0 – 28.7 points​

  • Percent of population at 100% of the federal poverty level: 0 – 25.1 points​

  • Percent of population age 65 and over: 0 – 20.2 points​

  • Infant mortality rate: 0 – 26 points​

0 represents completely underserved, 100 represents best served​

Score must be 62.0 or LESS in order to qualify for a MUA/P designation​
