Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) helps people with disabilities to achieve their goals for employment and independence. Services are individualized to prepare for, gain, retain, or advance in career pathways. Many services are provided at no cost to the eligible individual. However, some services are subject to a sliding fee scale based on income.

Supported Employment

Supported Employment provides training for individuals with disabilities who require one-on-one assistance to learn their job duties. A job coach works with the individual and their VR counselor to find their strengths and needed supports for job success. These services are provided through partnerships with community-based agencies.

The Self-Employment program works with clients pursuing a career goal of self-employment. We may be able to assist with technical and financial assistance.

Services for Deaf/Hard of Hearing

We work with individuals who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deaf-Blind, or have a speech impediment. We strive to help individuals with the ability to have better communication, allow more independence, and a better quality of life. By enhancing communication, it allows options to gain, maintain, or return to the workforce. Services are customized based on need.

Rural Services

Agriculture is more than just an industry in North Dakota, it is a way of life. The economies of North Dakota's small towns are largely dependent on the success of farmers and ranchers. Rural services are available to farmers, ranchers, and people living in rural communities who are experiencing difficulties doing their job due to a disability.

Independent Living

Independent Living (IL) provides services to help individuals with disabilities live and work more independently. In North Dakota we have four Centers for Independent Living (CILs) that provide services to individuals with disabilities of all ages. The services are individualized to meet the person's needs at no cost.


Services May Include:

  • Training to be more independent in the home and community.
  • Peer-mentoring
  • Assistance with leisure activities.
  • Getting out of a nursing home.
  • Getting community resources for housing.
  • Financial management skills.

Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology (AT) is a term used to describe devices, technology, and aids that allow a person to be more independent. Providing AT is a solution to retain and gain qualified employees. People can increase productivity and decrease injury by having the right equipment. 


Some Examples of AT:

  • Screen reading software.
  • Hands free telephone (headset).
  • Large keyboards.
  • Adjustable desk and/or chair.
  • Talking calculator.

We work with North Dakota Assistive and the Job Accommodation Network to find the best technology to meet your needs.

Client Assistance Program

VR works with the Client Assistance Program (CAP) to resolve your issues and concerns by offering advice and providing help. CAP is available to assist and advocate for you if you are dissatisfied with any action or inaction on the part of the VR program. You may request help from CAP at any time. 

Should it be necessary, CAP can assist with mediation or a fair hearing.
