In many cases, there is likely no family history of the condition and you might not know where to begin to look for information. This page will provide you and your family helpful information, resources and support to help you on this unexpected journey.

This sticker is for parents who have children with medical conditions that could be impacted by Emergency Medical Services (EMS). In the case of an emergency and the parent is not able to communicate with EMS, they would know that the child has a special health care condition.

Family Support Organizations

Family Voices of ND partners with families who have children with special health care needs to find resources and services that can help them navigate through the public and private health systems. Family Voices staff are also parents of children/youth and young adults with chronic health, physical, developmental and mental health challenges. Having a child with a disability can be overwhelming and exhausting, but Family Voices staff are here to help!

Family Voices has created a Care Notebook for families who have children with special health care needs or disabilities to help organize important health information about their child's health care all in one place. The notebook is available online as a fillable pdf document or a hard copy can be requested by sending an email to nbs@nd.gov.

Designer Genes is a local down syndrome support network whose mission is to strengthen opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome and those who support them to learn, earn and belong. 

Designer Genes has created "Welcome Boxes" that hospitals can provide to families with who have a newly diagnosed child with Down syndrome.

The ND Department of Health and Human Services (NDDHHS) Special Health Services Unit promotes a system of care and services that improves the health and well-being of individuals with special health care needs and their families. If your baby's provider suspects that your baby may have a medical condition that requires testing and treatment, NDDHHS may be able to provide financial assistance and resources for you.

Project Carson supports families who have received a prenatal or at birth diagnosis. 

Parent to Parent is a statewide network of parents supporting families of children with development delays, disabilities and special health needs. 

 

ND Hands & Voices supports families with children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing without bias around communication modes or methodology. They are a parent-driven non-profit organization that provides families with resources, networks and information they need to improve communication access and educational outcomes for their children.

The ND Department of Health and Human Services (NDDHHS) Special Health Services Unit promotes a system of care and services that improves the health and well-being of individuals with special health care needs and their families. If your baby's provider suspects that your baby may have a medical condition that requires testing and treatment, NDDHHS may be able to provide financial assistance and resources for you. 

The Financial Coverage program services children with special or chronic health conditions who meet eligibility criteria. Visit the website for more details to see if your child may qualify.

Medicaid is a state and federally funded program that helps pay for health care services for qualifying low-income adults, children, pregnant women, older adults and people with disabilities.
