Cottage Food Act
During North Dakota’s 65th Legislative Assembly in 2017, lawmakers passed House Bill 1433. This law created the North Dakota Cottage Foods Act, which went into effect on August 1, 2017.
The Cottage Foods Act allows people to sell certain homemade foods directly to customers. The customer must be informed that the food was made in a home kitchen and was not inspected by a health department. The food must also be meant for home use.
This law gives small and home-based businesses a chance to start selling food without license or inspection fees. It also helps bring new food products to people in North Dakota. Keeping consumers safe and healthy is important to health agencies and business owners. The resources below can help business owners make sure their cottage food products are safe and high quality.
