Terms and Meanings

Some terms that we use in this chapter may not be familiar. These terms and their meanings are listed below.

  • Assistance: Programs that can help you.
  • Facility: A health care building or practice.
  • Medicaid Abuse: To use Medicaid funds for services that are not medically needed or causing unnecessary cost to the Medicaid program.
  • Household: The people who are part of your family, living in your home, and/or are listed on your Medicaid application.
  • Provider: A doctor, nurse, therapist, or another qualified health care professional.
  • Services: Care, treatments, testing, checkups, equipment, supplies, and other ways your health care providers help you stay healthy.

Finding an Enrolled Provider

When you are looking for a new provider, you should always ask if they are enrolled in ND Medicaid. Getting a medical service or filling an order should always be done with an enrolled provider or you may be responsible for the costs.

Giving Us Your Updates

It is important to let us know of any changes to your household and/or contact information. It is your responsibility to send us proof of these changes. Examples of changes are:

  • You moved to a new residence.
  • You changed your phone number.
  • Your job or income has changed.
  • A new member has been added to your family, or a member has left your family.

Check your mail and read letters from ND Medicaid. There may be very important information included that can keep your coverage active. Complete any forms we send you right away and send them back. You can report changes or get help by contacting our Customer Support Center.

You can learn more about giving us your updates in the Maintaining Your Coverage chapter of this handbook.

Patient Etiquette

Our health care providers are busy, and you can help them out. Below are a few things you can do:

  • Cancel or reschedule your appointments as soon as you know you can’t attend.
  • Pre-plan your health care by scheduling your appointments ahead of time.
  • Schedule your child’s summer wellness visit together with their sports physical.
  • Ask your provider if Medicaid covers the medical care you have planned.

Reporting Your Information

It is important that you are honest about the information you give to us. You should always:

  • Be truthful about all the information you share with Medicaid.
  • Report any changes to your household when they occur.
  • Make sure Medicaid has your correct and current contact information.

Being dishonest with us can lead to consequences such as loss of Medicaid benefits, having to repay funds for services received, suspension from the Medicaid program, civil fines, or criminal charges.

Using Your Medicaid Coverage with Other Insurance

You must update us if you have secondary health insurance coverage. You should inform all your providers, pharmacies, and health care facilities of all insurance policies you have. Contact our Customer Support Center if you have questions about how to properly use your Medicaid coverage.
