There are many ways to learn new skills for your job. This is especially important if you work with children. Training helps make sure children in North Dakota get good care.

Professional development can include:

  • Conferences
  • Training events
  • College classes
  • Earning certificates
  • Finishing a college degree

HHS created the North Dakota Early Childhood Workforce Registry, formally known as Growing Futures. The Registry checks and approves training sponsors, trainers, and training events to ensure they meet the standards.

You can find training on the ND Early Childhood Hub training calendar. These trainings can help you meet licensing rules and build your skills. New trainings are added often, so the calendar is updated regularly.

Search for training on the training calendar.

Training Levels

Level 1 courses offer basic information on a topic. They count toward clock hours for renewing a child care license. These are for people who want to move up in Career Pathways, Categories A-D. This course level is informative but not in-depth.

Level 2 courses help you learn more about Early Childhood concepts and how to use what you learn in real situations. These courses help people prepare for a credential or certification. They give you a chance to study a topic in more detail. Level 2 courses also help you move up the Career Pathways, in Categories A-D.

Level 3 courses are for people working for a degree in Early Childhood or Child Development. They are also for those finishing coursework to maintain a teaching license. These courses are from higher education institutions. They do not appear on the Training Calendar. Rather, these courses are added to a person’s Registry record after the fact. Level 3 courses meet childcare licensing needs when they are completed within your current licensing year.

Note: Thesis and dissertation credits do not count as training hours. They aren’t added to your learning record.

Early Childhood licensing specialists will ask for your HHS Licensing Training Record. This record lists the training you’ve done. It only includes approved training from the last 36 months.

  • Log in to your Registry account.
  • Scroll down to Reporting and select View Reports.
  • Select HHS Licensing Training Record
  • The file will be available in your downloads folder as a PDF document.

Self-reported training means you entered the training yourself.   It must be reviewed and approved before it counts.

Any training taken more than once within 36 months will show as Duplicate. The clock hours won’t count toward your yearly training total. They also won’t be accepted for annual child care licensing.

HHS licensing doesn’t accept the same training for child care license renewal. This rule applies if the training happens within 36 months.

CPR and First Aid training isn’t recorded in the Registry. So, the hours can't count toward your annual licensing training.
