Why You Should Consider Attending the Training

Lead is a toxic metal used in a variety of products and materials including paint, water pipes, and contaminated soil. Exposure to lead is harmful in children and can cause long-term neurological problems, behavioral issues, and developmental delays. Lead poison is especially harmful to children under the age of six. Children can be exposed through chipping or peeling paint in pre-1978 homes. Renovation, remodeling, or repainting jobs performed on pre-1978 homes can cause lead dust to be disturbed. If lead-safe practices are not followed, this lead dust can settle on floors, windowsills, doors, and other surfaces in the home.

The EPA’s Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule requires workers to be trained on EPA lead-safe practices if work that disturbs paint is being performed on pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities such as daycares. These penalties can include fines of more than $37,500 per violation/per day. The certification is good for five years and must be renewed before it expires by taking a half-day Refresher Class.
