There are two vaccines available to prevent mpox and other orthopox viruses:

  • JYNNEOS, a replication-deficient live Vaccinia virus vaccine, licensed in 2019, and
  • ACAM2000, a replication-competent live Vaccinia virus vaccine.

Due to the safety profile of the two vaccines, JYNNEOS is preferred over ACAM2000 for mpox prevention. Persons at risk for occupational exposure to mpox will be offered vaccination.

Orthopoxvirus vaccines are not available through private markets and are currently only indicated for special populations for pre-and-post-exposure prophylaxis. Providers must consult with NDHHS to receive these vaccines.

To find out more about who is eligible to receive the vaccine and where the vaccine is available in North Dakota, use the Mpox Vaccine Locator.
